Liver Cancer

Liver cancer is a a very complex and challenging tumor to manage due to the dual problem of underlying liver damage present in most patients. Treatment choices for liver cancer are guided not based on tumor stage (Stage I-IV) as is common in most other solid organ cancers. Instead, a treatment algorithm, or “decision tree” is followed at most centers that specialize in liver cancer worldwide. The algorithm, which is based as much as possible on the results of published research, indicates whether a patient is eligible for liver transplantation, surgical resection, intrahepatic regional or “liver-directed” therapies, radiation, chemotherapy, or a clinical trial.
